An Early Crafty Monday: Angry Birds Week

In this Post: Angry Birds Craft etc and anger management lessons, landforms (nifty diorama), and sneak peek of what is to come…

Bird title

Hello friends :)! I come to you early. We are enjoying my husband’s spring break so I’m posting back to back. Last week in homeschool we did this Angry Birds Anger Management lesson found here:

http://thehometeacher.blogspot.com/2012/02/dont-be-angry-bird-lessons-on-anger.html

The Home Teacher has several Angry Birds posts. You can search for them yourself or find them all on my Pinterest. The link will be at the end. I love the way this creative mommy taught her daughter how to control her anger.

*Bible Lesson

Below some of the printables are pictured.  The point is to NOT be an Angry Bird. I explained that it’s natural to be angry but what matters is how you deal with your anger. One of the cool down strategies is to go to the bird’s nest (a calm quiet place).

I wanted to incorporate how God helps us with our anger. Jesus will help us to forgive if we give our anger to Him. That is the most important “cool down strategy”.  We also read about Cain and Abel. We learned that anger starts small but can get out of hand if we don’t control it. Cain’s anger led to the murder of his brother. That goes right along with what Jesus said about hating our brother being the same as murder. It all starts in the heart.

*Science

For science Michael looked at this bird book on Kindle: http://www.amazon.com/Birds-Beginners-Learn-Series-ebook/dp/B007O9YEQQ/

Then he classified the Angry Birds by what real life birds he thought they were. I really don’t think the white bird is a song sparrow but who knows lol.

We also looked at the life cycle of birds and Michael filled out a work sheet. Link here:

*Character Lesson

I modified this character lesson on honesty from: http://www.overthebigmoon.com/an-object-lesson-for-kids-on-honesty/

I talked about how we try to cover up our mistakes with lies but that just makes things worse. I illustrated this with salt on ice cream. I wish I had taken a picture of Michael’s face. We also read about the story of Ananias and Sapphira in his kids devotion. The lesson was perfect because he had lied to me that morning and it really hit home. Of course I let him have the ice cream with out salt after and we talked about forgiveness and how the Truth sets us free.

*Cooking

I really want Michael to learn practical meals first. I’ve already taught him how to make mac n’ cheese but I know he will have to make it several times to remember it by heart. Shoot, even I still look at the directions on the box. So for cooking I had Michael help me make supper. I told him what ingredients and utensils to find. Then I gave him step by step directions and only stepped in during really hard or dangerous parts (like frying).

Michael made a menu and set the table. Our meal included salmon patties, mac n’ cheese, and green beans.

*Math

Michael did this Angry Birds math sheet for our special math. You can find it here:

*Character Lesson

We finished up our Angry Bird study by talking about anger triggers and how to take that angry energy and put it into something else (like drawing a picture or jumping on the trampoline). We also talked about not being a bully. I’ve been surprised by how we were tested this week. We were both challenged to control our anger. Michael had a falling out with a boy at church and unfriended the kid in haste. After a talk he realized that he was in the wrong and should forgive. Michael called the boy up and apologized. The boy apologized too and they decided to be friends again. It was a beautiful thing and like Nana said…it took courage.

We watched this awesome Pixar short on youtube about some bird bullies. It’s hilarious but also teaches a lesson. Remember email subscribers to come to my blog to see videos and links.

*Geography

We continued our study of landforms. I’ve had a hard time figuring out what’s considered the main landforms and some people call certain things landforms that aren’t technically landforms. So We did a mixture of projects and got a little of this and that. Maybe it will all come out in the wash…lol. We’re not getting into the hard core details in second grade.

So we did this neat landform flip book found here:

It has the Ocean (which of course isn’t land so I guess they had it to show what an island looks like). Then we have the plains.

Mountains and a valley. Also a lake and a cave.

Lastly, a volcano

Then we did this free cut and paste landform sheet.  It got into the harder landforms like plateaus, deltas, and isthmus’ (I can’t even pronounce that one). Link here: http://www.superteacherworksheets.com/landforms.html

The Crafty Classroom had this sweet Landform Diorama that we just had to try. Here’s the link:
